Before and after

Not “once upon a time.” The rabbit with one short ear.

Shop storybooks swap in a name. This one is built from the things only your family knows.

Before: what you type

“Theo, 4. Loves diggers and the ducks on the canal. Grey rabbit called Mr Buttons, one ear shorter (washing machine). Best friend Priya, they build duck hotels. Scared of the dark bit of hallway. Says ‘actually’ at the start of everything, calls the moon the night light. Grandma Jo makes flapjacks. No monsters, nothing sad.”

After: what you read tonight

A duck in a yellow safety helmet knocks on Theo's window: the night light has fallen in the canal and the ducklings cannot sleep. Theo takes the torch Grandma Jo sent, walks eleven steps through the dark bit, drives the yellow digger to the lock, scoops out the moon and dries it with Mr Buttons until it glows. Five chapters, his door open a hand's width at the end.

Sample: Theo and his family are made up. Every real story is written only from the answers you send.

Questions

How long is the story?

About 900 words in five short chapters, which reads aloud in eight to ten minutes. The PDF is A5 (or half US Letter): a cover page and six or seven story pages, decorated with stars and a moon, no pictures of people.

Is anything made up?

The adventure is invented; that is the point of a story. Every fact in it comes from your twelve answers: the name, the age, the toy, the friend, the grandparent, the worry, the words they say. We never add a real detail you did not give us, and we avoid whatever you ask us to avoid.

Can I have it printed?

We send a print-ready PDF only. A5 prints two pages to a sheet of A4 at home or at any print shop; most parents print it on card and staple or ribbon the spine, or read it from a tablet.
